How It All Started

The Bookfeeding Project was born from the belief that rather than being thrown away, a great deal of unused books and old electronic devices (PCs) would be of better use to help improve the literacy rate and foster education in communities where such materials are not easily accessible to everyone.

The first Bookfeeding Project library was established by Beatrice in 2011 after she volunteered for AID India, an NGO based in Tamil Nadu. Two years later and thousands of kilometers away, Alena, while planning her holidays, ended up organizing a second-hand book collection and a fundraiser event for an unexpected project - a library in Madagascar. Fate connected the two volunteers through a mutual friend and in the summer 2014, a second Bookfeeding Project library was built and with that the network of Bookfeeding Projects was born.

What united these two people and the ever-growing group of friends and volunteers who support the Bookfeeding Project was the common fight against illiteracy and lacking access to information by helping people gain better access to education through building libraries and safe education-hubs in communities around the world.

To make our efforts even more effective, Bookfeeding Project was registered as a charity in Scotland (OSCR) on January 12, 2016 (SC046248).

After years of experience, we learnt how important it is to keep in touch with the communities and work with them. Bookfeeding libraries are not only about books. They are about knowledge. About gaining, sharing and spreading knowledge. We work with the communities and support them in projects and ideas to better the lives of the disadvantaged in the community.
