Kenya Likoni Bookfeeding

This is the second Bookfeeding library in Kenya. It was built in cooperation with the Kipepeo Foundation and Books Abroad who assisted with funds and provided books.

The library is situated in a building of Timbwane Baptist Academy primary school, which is located in Likoni. Likoni is a very poor slum area outside of Mombasa Island. With many primary and high schools around, the library is accessible to a large group of compromised children and has thus become a valuable community centre.

The building was kindly donated by Timbwane Baptist Academy. Its secure location within the Academy's complex makes it easier to guard the books and educational material from possible intruders.

Moreover, the excellent location allows primary school students to read and study in the library before school starts, during breaks, or in the afternoons after school is finished. Teachers and older students are also very eager and happy to volunteer in keeping this library open throughout the week.

However, as with all other Bookfeeding libraries, the library is also open to the public. Many signs invite all members of the community to come in and read.

In November 2015 we received a pallet full of books (500kg) for this library.

About volunteering

International volunteers are welcomed to visit and volunteer, however the community cannot provide accommodation for anyone as the space in townships is very limited. The accommodation and food would therefore be your responsibility.

People at the Project

Haggai

Haggai is the one who suggested this place for the library. He is headteacher, however not at this school. Being an orphan himself, he had been adopted by the Timbwane school headmaster. Haggai completed his studies and wants to give back to the community. He is very conscientious and will be there to help you whenever you need it.

At the moment, he is coaching a local boys’ (homeless, orphaned or poor) football team, which made it to the league recently. The field is just in front of the school where the library is located, so you might see him there and join in if you like the game!
