Cooking Classes In Koguta, Kenya

When I was planning my trip around Africa, Kenya was actually not on my „to do list“, as I didn’t have the best references on this country: overcrowded, too commercial, not safe etc. However, flight via Nairobi was far too cheap not to buy it, so I decided to spend my last weeks before going back to Europe in Kenya.

I chose to stay in library in Koguta village near Victoria lake. I must say it is one of the most beautiful locations I have experienced in Africa, with stunning views and many walking trails around to be explored (in case you don’t mind to share it with monkeys). The village itself is big enough to have all necessary amenities like shops, market or pub, on the other hand, it is small enough to make you feel to be on countryside. The library there is in very nice and spacious building with enough space not only for reading but also for some other possible activities.

As I am foodie, one day I decided to organize a cooking class in the library. Well, cooking in Kenya requires creativity since it is not always easy to get essential ingredients. Luckily, I managed to buy everything what was necessary and together with kids we could begin to prepare the apple cake. As soon as we finished grating the apples, we mixed all ingredients and the cake was reday to bake. However, another challenge appeared to be baking amenities. What was my surprise when I learnt it is possible to bake even without using the oven, just in pot surrounded by coal! The cake was successfully finished and disappeared within a few minutes ☺ I stayed in Koguta only for 2 weeks, however, it was wonderful time. Kids were awesome, madam Tina's cuisine absolutely delicious and villagers very welcoming. Now I am back home and I miss a lot sweet pineapples, my favourite food chapatis and green grams and mainly always positive attitude of local people.
