Ukonga library is located on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam near the Julius Nyerere International airport. It is run by members of the Ukonga Basketball academy.
During one month the volunteers Maya and Austin together with the community around Majengo library have managed to build a chimney solar dryer. The dryer is designed to provide efficient drying even in hazy or partly cloudy conditions. Constructing the dryer is simple, and it can be built from low-cost locally sourced materials.
Bookfeeding, together with the community of Kuni Village in the Eastern Cape, South Africa have started the initial stages of building a library within the local school – Kuni Primary School. Members of this community have enthusiastically taken the steps towards realising their dream of having a library by starting the ‘Donate a Brick’ initiative.
Ezekiel Zekiya Mudimu is the director of Simuka Africa Youth Organisation in Zimbabwe. The organisation was established by a network of students in 2006 to confront the many problems of the area. It devotes itself to the cause of education, agriculture and health care, clean water and sanitary facilities
While we will continue to raise money in order to help building libraries, we have become aware of a problem that slightly differs from our usual projects. You may not see the connection to Bookfeeding at first glance but it is an issue dear to our hearts and an important matter to address, for there should not be any more gender unfairness when it comes to youth's school attendance!
Rosa and Emilia spent few weeks at our library in Madagascar. They got to know about our library through another volunteer, who visited us few years ago. We are happy that those experiences are positive and hope more people will come to experience them.
