Our Workshops
The Bookfeeding libraries are hosting a variety of workshops focusing on community needs and skills development. Key workshops include workshops on reusable sanitary pads, chimney solar dryer construction, math and english tutoring or mushroom growing.
Additionally, some libraries are focusing on local needs, such as providing educational materials (textbooks, dictionaries, teaching aids), and creating spaces for the community to gather, learn, and engage in activities like movie nights.
Each library continues to evolve, with community-driven initiatives and workshops that address local challenges and offer skills-building opportunities.
Reusable Sanitary Pads
These are held across several libraries, including in Uganda, Zambia, and Tanzania, where the focus is on addressing menstruation-related challenges. Workshops teach how to make reusable sanitary pads, which are financially accessible, environmentally friendly, and culturally accepted. The workshops also cover related topics such as menstruation education, myths, contraception, and business opportunities for pad production. This initiative is gaining traction in libraries like Visiwani in Tanzania and Kanyama in Zambia, with the aim of empowering women and providing sustainable solutions to menstrual health.

Chimney Solar Dryer Construction
Volunteers and the local community in Majengo, Tanzania have built a chimney solar dryer, which provides efficient drying of food products in various weather conditions. The dryer is already being used to dry moringa leaves and tomatoes, with the potential to expand to other local foods like bananas and corn. The project aims to provide a source of income for the community by offering dried products for sale.
Math and English Tutoring
The Visiwani library in Tanzania organizes consistent tutoring sessions for primary school children, helping them with Math and English to supplement their education. This is especially important in public schools with overcrowded classrooms.
Mushroom Growing
Mushroom cultivation is a simple and cost-effective process that yields quick returns within three months. Mushroom farming is ideal for urban areas as it requires minimal space compared to traditional crops. Mushrooms are a nutritious, low-calorie food source, rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. This initiative addresses food security and provides a sustainable business opportunity, as mushrooms are in high demand in local markets, hotels, and restaurants. They can also be preserved through sun-drying or canning in a salt solution. Mushroom workshops are currently held in Kasese, Uganda.
