Cynthia's Volunteer Experience

To volunteer in the Bookfeeding project: it is to experience life in a Malagasy village,to be integrated in a poor, simple but incredibly friendly community, and share their daily lives. Ambohitrakely is a tiny village with no running water, no electricity, located 2 hours walking from Mahitsy, closest city itself located two hours from Antananarivo.

The bookfeeding project is a small library at the entrance of the village, where children come to read, play, or take French, English or another courses after their school hours. Adults sometimes even come to enjoy! Besides any other involvement in the library is welcome!

For me, when I arrived, we launched a collective sorting of waste system with large clay bins, to promote the recovery and recycle of what can be reused. And also we started to grow a vegetable garden dedicated to volunteers. I hope the following volunteers will take care of it!

Saturday is the best day to get away! There is Mahitsy's market, which allows to fill the kitchen, but mainly enjoy a beautiful Zumba afternoon with a happy and motivated team! For this you simply ask information to Pascaline, who will always be there to help you no matter your Request!

To live in Ambohitrakely means sharing the simple life of most of the Malagasy community, by shopping in various surrounding vilages, cooking directly over a fire, get water from the well, wash with "cold bucket shower ", share the "toilets" with hundreds of huge cockroaches that arise after nightfall, and get lost in the immensity of Madagascar starry skies, unpolluted by lightning from cities! For me, it was an extraordinary adventure, surrounded by incredibly nice people and volunteers!
