Sierra Leone Orugo Bookfeeding
When our volunteer Alena was travelling through Africa, she met Alusine, a couchsurfer from Sierra Leone. Alusine invites many tourists and other people to his community to show them the beauty of Sierra Leone and motivates his community always to learn and speak different languages. After only a few days Alusine was enthusiastic about the idea of setting up a bookfeeding library in his community and it didn't take long for Bookfeeding Projects to receive the project application.
Orugo is located in the foothills of the Freetown area in the Calaba Town area. Although it is a somewhat dusty and rocky area, it is accessible by motorbike and has a population of about 3000 people.
The community of Orugo has only existed for about 15 years, so the population is relatively young, motivated and eager to learn new things. There are more than 200 students attending school or university, who benefit from access to study and reading material in the area. Hassan Bangura, who is an assistant professor at a university in Freetown, will ensure that the library is open to all students and that books are organised to provide help and materials to all who need them.
Construction work began in late summer 2019 and the library was completed in December 2019. Over 25 boxes of books were shipped to Sierra Leone by our partner Books Abroad for this project. The Orugo community is now looking forward to welcoming new volunteers who could help in the library and other activities.
