South Africa Mthimkhulu Bookfeeding
The Mthimkhulu Bookfeeding Project is our upcoming library in South Africa, located in the heart of Kleinmond. Kleinmond is a coastal town known for its beautiful landscapes but also faces significant economic inequalities. The Mthimkhulu Village Centre, a community-driven NGO operating under the Grail Centre Trust, plays a vital role in supporting underprivileged families through educational programs, community health initiatives, youth development, and a community food garden.
Despite these efforts, the community still struggles with high illiteracy rates, especially among children from low-income backgrounds. Many children lack access to books, and existing educational facilities are often overcrowded, with a shortage of teachers and resources. Parents expressed concern that their children do not have safe and supportive spaces to develop reading skills, and the existing public library is too far and difficult to access. Recognizing these challenges, the community reached out to us, asking if a library could be the next step in their journey towards education and empowerment. After meeting with local stakeholders, including educators, parents, and the Mthimkhulu Village Centre team – we agreed that a community library would be a crucial addition. It will serve as a safe space where children can access books, develop literacy skills, and participate in engaging activities such as storytelling and book discussions.
We are starting this project now by fundraising and collecting books to stock the future library. The plan is to set up a container library on the Mthimkhulu Village Centre premises, making books and learning resources easily accessible. This innovative approach will provide a comfortable and welcoming space for children aged 2 to 15, helping them develop a love for reading and a brighter future.
This is an exciting opportunity for volunteers to get involved! The community is eager to learn, and there is plenty of room for creative contributions. Whether you want to help set up the library, donate books, or organize reading sessions, your support can make a big difference. Contact us if you would like to be a part of this initiative!
