Uganda Tororo Bookfeeding

Tororo is a small town in eastern Uganda. Known as a trading hub where people from the surrounding villages come to work, Tororo also has a number of primary schools but to our knowledge currently no functioning public library. It was Aputiri primary school, a governmental school located 5 kilometers outside of Tororo that reached out asking for support in creating a community library.

The Aputir Primary School and Community were established in the early 1950s to further education in the villages in and around Tororo. The school started with just grass-thatched houses as an office and mudded walls held together with iron sheets that served as classrooms. Some classes were even held in the shade of the surrounding trees.

The newly renovated library is full of both educational books for primary-level school children and story books that are mainly used by the pupils of Aputiri school. However, it is also open to the general public which is important for the whole Tororo community that completely lacks public libraries. Plans are afoot for English courses and workshops on agriculture, fishing, agribusiness, and digital marketing. The school headteacher and librarian are entirely in charge of managing the library and the Bookfeeding volunteers.

Silver Owori

Silver Owori is a community volunteer and ex-student of the Aputir Primary School. He enjoys supporting development of his community. He is also a loving father to his two children, enjoys watching football, reading books, and is an avid birdwatcher.
